Preya and Shreya

Mentally remove everything and be free. This is divine life. This is the direct way to Moksha/Salvation. – Swami Sivananda

Constantly discern between the Preya Marga – the Pleasant Path – and the Sreya Marga – the Path to Purity.

You will have to do this again and again every time the mind tempts you to follow the ways of the material dualistic World and to imitate others. This desire to imitate others is exceedingly powerful and may over power even a wise man. Worry not about finding money to buy a scooter, when you have no need for a scooter. Just because all your friends travel on scooters. Do not bother about how to send your son or daughter overseas to university only because your neighbours have sent theirs.

Keep away from temptations of all sorts. Do not walk into places of temptation and then struggle to resist temptation. It will tax your will unnecessarily. Even if you succeed in resisting the temptation, it may leave a craving in the mind. Craving induces restlessness.

The senses have been created with a natural tendency to flow out towards the objective World and Universe. This externalization dissipates the rays of the mind, weakens the intellect and blinds the eye of intuitive perception. Unity is falsely represented as diversity. The untrue appears to be True. Pain appears to be pleasure. Shadow holds out greater charms than the Substance Itself. This is the path of ‘Preya’ (the Pleasant) which the dull witted ignorant human pursues.

A rare hero, however, desirous of perceiving the Inner Atman, turns their gaze within. This hero withdraws the rays of their mind. The senses are drawn inward as the limbs of a tortoise are drawn into the shell. The mental modifications are stopped. Buddhi is made to surrender itself at the feet of the Atman. Ego is emptied, so that the entire being might be filled by the Light of the higher Self! This is the path of Sreya, which the wise one pursues.
